Marc Vergara, the cool Chief of Communication and Public Advocacy at UNICEF Malaysia, says that “technology has given you the power to speak out about the issues you care about. So, we want you to channel your inner artist and snap some striking photos that tell a story about how you see your rights in Malaysia today. You have the chance to make a difference and take a shot at life!”
Article 13 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) says you have the right to express yourselves in meaningful ways. And that’s where Picture My Rights photo contest comes in! It’s your opportunity to show off your views on children’s rights and the stuff that matters most to you, all through the medium of photography.
Picture My Rights through 5 Themes
Are you ready to join the fun? If you’re aged 13 to 24 and living in Malaysia, you’re invited to submit photos that fit into any of these exciting themes from the CRC:
- Dignity & A fair chance: Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, no matter who they are. So, show us what dignity means to you!
- Survival & Development: We all need basic stuff like shelter, food, water, and healthcare to survive and thrive. Let’s see your take on these essentials!
- Education: Education isn’t just about school. It’s also about growing as a person, respecting others, and caring for the environment. How would you capture that in a photo?
- Protection from violence: No one should ever have to go through violence or hurt. Let’s raise awareness about this important issue!
- Participation: Your voice matters! You have the right to share your thoughts and opinions freely. Show us how you express yourself!
Marc says child participation is vital – you should have a say in issues that affect your life, learn new skills, and connect with your community. Picture My Rights is your chance to let your creativity soar and share your perspective on life through your camera lens.
The contest runs for two months, from 17 July to 20 September 2023. Post your masterpiece on Instagram with #PictureMyRights and #AShotatLife. Don’t have Insta or your account is private? No worries! Email your photos to mediakl@unicef.org.

Speaking of World Children’s Day, it’s on 20 November, commemorating the adoption of the CRC. This treaty outlines all the rights children should enjoy to grow, learn, play, and reach their full potential. Malaysia ratified it in 1995, with a few reservations on five articles.
Picture My Rights rocked in 2014 and 2017, but this one’s gonna be even bigger and better! So, grab your cameras, unleash your creativity, and join the movement to make a difference through photography. Every shot you take could change the world!
