– Nelson Mandela

Human Rights & Dignity

Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights without discrimination. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, upholds that all human beings are born free and equal; everyone has the right to a life of dignity.

The Problem

Across the world, millions of children, women and men are treated unequally because of their nationality, race, religion, gender, age, disability, HIV status, or where they come from. Fueled by myths, fears, ignorance and prejudice, discrimination continues to scar our societies. It is immoral, hurtful and dehumanizing; and is a violation of human rights.

The Cyrus Cylinder is believed to be the first human rights treaty. It is created by Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (ancient Iran).
