Every child dreams of a carefree childhood – filled with laughter, games and the sweetness of life. Unfortunately, reality hits hard for some children. Sadly, not all children have the same playground to explore their dreams. Equality, freedom and justice seem like distant realities for them.
Meet Ahmad and Khaled, two children with dreams as vast as the sky, but on drastically different paths. Their lived realities reveal stark differences based on privilege and refugee status. Moreover, their stories underscore that not all children have an equal playing field.
Shared dreams, worlds apart
Ahmad, born into a world of opportunities, has access to education, healthcare, and the security of a loving family. His path towards his dreams is full of encouragement and support. Inspired by the wonders around him, Ahmad dreams of becoming a scientist. His story is one of privilege, where doors open, and success seems like the final destination.
On the other side is Khaled, a resilient soul born into a refugee family, whose childhood was filled with uncertainty and sorrow. Forced to abandon their homeland, Khaled’s family sought sanctuary in Malaysia from the hostilities that had wrecked their world. The harsh reality of dislocation overshadows his dreams for education and a better future. Khaled dreams of becoming a doctor, a beacon of hope for his community, and an example of the human spirit’s perseverance.
But Khaled’s hopes face the harsh reality of a system that often denies opportunities to people without status. He is burdened by limited educational and healthcare opportunities, constant fear of arrest, and the shame associated with his refugee status. In his community, children face barriers to birth registration and adults lack the legal right to work.
The tale of these two boys underline the persistent disparities in opportunities for many children and young people on the move. Ahmad’s privileged upbringing provides him a wealth of chances – from quality education to extracurricular activities. His path is free of barriers, allowing him to easily explore multiple career routes. In stark contrast, Khaled grapples with formidable challenges, worsened by limited access to educational opportunities. His dream to become a doctor seems like an impossible mountain to climb.
Equality, Freedom and Justice
This 10th December marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Importantly, the milestone reminds us that every person, no matter their background, deserves equality, freedom, and justice. Ahmad and Khaled’s realities reveal that these principles, however, aren’t always universally practiced. Their stories call us to examine the structures keep inequality alive. Additionally, they urge us to work toward a society where every child’s dreams, regardless of privilege or refugee status, can flourish.
Both children’s dreams emphasize the necessity of justice. In a just world, opportunities shouldn’t be a birthright or a geographical privilege. Ahmad’s dreams thrive in a just environment, while Khaled faces a world where justice seems elusive. Ahmad revels in the freedom to explore, learn, and dream without restriction. On the other hand, Khaled struggles with the limits of his refugee status, where dreams are often sacrificed on the altar of survival.
Reflecting on Ahmad and Khaled’s stories, it’s clear that the gap between reality and the values of “Equality, Freedom, and Justice for all” need to be bridged. To take action, we need to focus on ensuring universal access to education. By championing policies that ensure every child, regardless of background, can benefit from quality education, we lay the foundation for a more equitable and just society.
Shared responsibility
So, what can we do as individuals? For a start, stay informed about the challenges faced by marginalized communities. We can also raise awareness, support educational programmes, and participate in initiatives that promote inclusivity. Additionally, we can speak up for policies that promote equal access to education. By doing so, we can help to break the chains of inequality and foster an environment where everyone can thrive.
As for me, I plan to engage with local organizations or initiatives focusing on education for all. At the same time, I hope to volunteer my time to support these causes. We can all help to create a world where every child pursues their dreams free from the weight of inequality.
On this Human Rights Day, let’s pledge to shape a future where the stories of all the Ahmads and Khaleds unite in shared opportunities. In doing so, we move closer to truly upholding the principles of Equality, Freedom and Justice for All, everywhere.
