Stop feeling worthless: 3 simple steps that helped me

I struggled too, and these gentle shifts gave me hope again.

Have you ever thought, “I don’t deserve to be here,” “I am such a useless human being, I bring trouble everywhere I go,” “I should give up, nothing will change no matter what I do,” or even “I am not good enough”? When these thoughts take over, it feels impossible to stop feeling worthless. I’ve been there too – and trust me, it’s not a fun place to be.

Sometimes I’d be like, “Oh man, not this again. I hate you!” HAHAHA. But it happens, lah – we’re human, and feelings don’t just vanish overnight. The good news is, there are little things we can do to make it easier. Let me share what worked for me – maybe it’ll help you too.

1. Regulate our emotions

Take a deep breath in… and out. Accept what we feel in this moment. Then gently remind ourselves:

  • “My feelings are valid.”
  • “I am not weak.”
  • “What I feel right now is not wrong.”

When I first tried this, I honestly felt a bit silly talking to myself like this. But slowly, it started feeling nice, like I was talking to my bestie instead of my enemy. It’s hard at first, not going to lie. But step by step, it got easier, and I began to believe in the words I was telling myself.

2. Find the cause of feeling worthless

For me, it came from low self-esteem (yup, that’s me, hehe). For others, it might come from past trauma, negative childhood experiences, or even a mix of everything.

Knowing the cause doesn’t fix it overnight, but it helps us understand ourselves better. Healing takes time, but it’s never too late to start.

3. Don’t let negativity sit too long

Why? Because it changes the way we think, feel, and act. The longer we hold on, the more it drains our energy, stresses us out, and blocks the good things in front of us.

Here’s my a little hack: I compliment myself over a small thing like waking up in the morning or doing my own skincare.  Little things add up – and they make the negativity less heavy.

Gentle reminders for all of us

  • We’re stronger than we think.
  • It’s okay to be vulnerable. That’s not weakness.
  • Cry if we need to. Let it all out; don’t keep it in.
  • It’s okay to talk about what we feel or what we’re going through right now.
  • We’re not a burden.

One last note for our hearts

Feeling worthless doesn’t mean we are worthless.  Our value is already there, even if we can’t see it right now. Healing takes time, but every little step forward is something to be proud of.

So, whenever it’s impossible to stop feeling worthless, remember this: we are loved, we are needed, and we matter more than we know. The world is softer because we’re in it.

And if no one’s told you yet today – I’m proud of us. Proud that we survived, proud that we tried, proud that we’re still here. We’re not alone in this. We’ll rise again, together.
