UNICEF

UNICEF stands for the United Nations Children’s Fund.

We work for a world where every child gets a fair chance – no matter who they are or where they come from. In more than 190 countries and territories, we save lives, protect rights, and help children reach their full potential. And we won’t stop until every child is safe, healthy, and educated.

“I believe that UNICEF is the most important branch of the U.N.; they do exceptional work to help the neediest children around the world.”

– Liam Neeson

OUR HISTORY

UNICEF was born from the ashes of World War II on 11 December 1946. Originally known as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, our very first mission was to provide milk, food, and medicine to children left hungry and homeless by war. Today, UNICEF stands for the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Our Milestones

UNICEF’S JOURNEY IN MALAYSIA

UNICEF has been working in Malaya since 1948, right after World War II, delivering milk to fight malnutrition and helping vaccinate over a million children against TB. In 1954, we shifted from emergency relief to long-term development, partnering with local communities and leaders to improve children’s lives.

Building a Brighter Future Together

Today, our work focuses on helping every child
survive and thrive, learn, stay safe from violence, live on a healthy planet, and get a fair chance in life – no matter their background or ability.

We work hand-in-hand with government, NGOs, businesses, media, academia – and young people like you – to make Malaysia a better place for children.

Fun fact: Actress Lisa Surihani is our fourth National Ambassador, following Upin & Ipin, Datuk Lee Chong Wei and the 3R TV Hosts (Celine, Kartini and Rafidah).
